Onam in Kochi 2026: Gifts, Offers, Sadya and Festive Celebrations

When Onam arrives, Kochi changes its rhythm. Streets become festive, shops fill with traditional clothes, supermarkets stock up for Sadya, offices and institutions organize celebrations, and neighbourhoods come alive with Pookalam, music and games. Onam Ponnonam in Kochi is not one event but a citywide celebration where tradition and modern life meet.

Kochi is gearing up for Onam with celebrations across malls, shops and residential communities. Lulu Mall, Forum Mall and Central Square Mall are hosting festive programmes, Onam offers and entertainment, while new films are also releasing during the season.

Onam is also a popular time for families to upgrade home appliances, kitchen equipment and utensils. Retailers like Pittappillil Agencies are offering special Onam deals on home and kitchen products. Meanwhile, resident associations across Kochi are organising Sadya, cultural programmes and community celebrations.

From Mahabali to Kochi

Onam begins with the beloved story of King Mahabali, remembered for his prosperous and equal kingdom. According to tradition, Mahabali returns to visit his people every year, and Kerala welcomes him with flowers, food, new clothes and togetherness.

The ten-day journey from Atham to Thiruvonam gradually builds the festive mood. In 2026, Thiruvonam falls on 26 August.

Athachamayam: The Festive Beginning

The Onam season gets a spectacular start with Athachamayam at Thrippunithura, where processions, traditional performances, percussion, decorated elephants and colourful costumes fill the streets. It is one of the best ways to experience Kochi’s cultural heritage at the beginning of the festive season.

Thrikkakara: The Spiritual Heart of Onam

The Thrikkakara Vamanamoorthy Temple holds a special place in the Onam tradition. Its annual 10-day Vamanamoorthy Utsav features Kodiyettu, temple rituals, cultural programmes, elephant processions, Onasadya and the concluding Arattu. With its connection to Vamana and the Mahabali legend, Thrikkakara offers a deeper spiritual experience of Onam.

Kakkanad Celebrates

Modern Kochi has its own Onam stage in Kakkanad. Community and district-level celebrations bring people together through Pookalam competitions, painting contests, tug-of-war, Onasadya, cultural programmes and music. The festivities culminate in a colourful grand procession, creating a lively public celebration for residents of the area.

Onam at Infopark and Offices

In Kochi’s corporate hub, Onam takes on a contemporary character. Infopark and offices across the city celebrate with traditional dress, Pookalam, music, dance, games, competitions and festive Sadya. It is a wonderful example of how Kerala’s traditions continue to find a place in today’s professional life.

Shopping, Textiles and Trade Fairs

Onam is also a major shopping season. Kochi’s textile showrooms, jewellery stores, supermarkets and shopping centres become busy with festive shoppers looking for kasavu sarees, mundus, traditional wear, gifts and household essentials.

Onam trade fairs and exhibitions add another dimension, bringing handloom, handicrafts, local products, food items and artisan-made goods to shoppers.

Pookalam, Sadya and Community Celebrations

From homes and apartment complexes to schools, colleges, offices and institutions, Pookalam competitions become a favourite activity. Children and adults work together to create colourful floral designs.

And then comes the highlight of Onam — Onasadya. Served traditionally on a banana leaf, the feast brings together rice, vegetables, curries, pickles, pappadam, chips.
