The Jewish Synagogue

Located in Fort Kochi, the Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568 by the Cochin Jewish community, stands as one of the oldest synagogues in India and a key historical landmark. The synagogue’s architecture features white-walled exteriors, a Dutch-style clock tower, and wrought-iron gates adorned with the Star of David. Inside, visitors can view a stunning collection of Belgian crystal chandeliers, decorative lamps, and hand-painted Chinese tiles that adorn the floor, reflecting the unique cultural heritage of the synagogue. The synagogue also houses valuable artifacts, including gold- and silver-decorated Torah scrolls, an intricately carved teak ark, and a rug presented by Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I. A standout feature is the 1,600-year-old copper plates inscribed with the community’s charter of independence, making this an important destination for those interested in the region’s Jewish history. The Paradesi Synagogue is a significant part of any Fort Kochi travel guide.
